WORLD GEOGRAPHY
One Semester 1 credit--Grade 9 This course provides students with knowledge of regional, cultural, and physical geography. This course satisfies one of the required credits for graduation in social studies. WORLD GEOGRAPHY HONORS One Semester 1 credit--Grade 9 This course is a more intensive study of geography and includes regional, physical, and cultural geography. Projects, higher-level thinking activities, and independent research are required. This course satisfies one of the required credits for graduation in social studies. Recommendation: A grade of A in 8th grade social studies and 8th grade English WORLD HISTORY One Semester 1 credit--Grade 9-12 This course provides students with knowledge of our global history from the Renaissance Period to the early 20th Century. This course satisfies one of the required credits for graduation in social studies. WORLD HISTORY HONORS One Semester 1 credit--Grade 9-12 This course is a more intensive study of global history and includes social, economic, and political viewpoints. Projects, higher-level thinking activities, and independent research are required. This course satisfies one of the required credits for graduation in social studies. Recommendation: A grade of A in 8th grade social studies and 8th grade English ANCIENT HISTORY One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 This is a study of world civilizations from 3200 BC to 1500 AD with emphasis on social, cultural, and political events in world history. This course is an elective course only. ANCIENT HISTORY HONORS One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 This is a study of ancient and medieval civilizations with emphasis on independent research and directed readings. This course is an elective course only and requires above average skills in reading and writing. ADVANCED PLACEMENT EUROPEAN HISTORY 1 & 2 One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 AP 1 is a survey of European history from the Renaissance to 1815. AP 2 is a survey of European history from 1815 to the present. The course is equal to college level European History. Emphasis will be on preparation for the AP Exam. This course includes college level reading and writing. This course satisfies one of the required credits for graduation in social studies. |
U.S. HISTORY
One Semester 1 credit--Grade 11-12 This course provides a comprehensive study of the history of the U.S. from reconstruction (1877-Present) to the present. A goal is to develop an interest in the study of American history. Emphasis is on preparation for the EOC exam. Required course for graduation ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY 1 (Elective credit only) One Semester 1 credit--Grade 11-12 This course is a survey of U.S. History to 1877. AP 1 does not satisfy the state requirement for U.S. History. Students are not required to take AP 1 before AP 2. AP 1 will focus on preparation for the AP exam dealing with topics prior to 1877. College-level reading, essay writing, and summer reading is required. ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY 2 (Satisfies U.S. History credit) One Semester 1 credit--Grade 11-12 The AP 2 course is a survey of U.S. History since 1877. AP 2 does serve as the state requirement for U.S. History. AP 2 will focus on preparation for the AP exam. AP 1 is not a prerequisite, so students may take AP 2 without first taking AP 1. College-level reading, essay writing, and summer reading is required. CONTEMPORARY ISSUES One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 This course will explore the social and culture aspects of American life. Students will study American music, pop culture, the Civil Rights Movement, local and state history, and sports. Independent research may be included. LOCAL AND REGIONAL HISTORY One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 This course is recommended to students who have a genuine interest in Appalachian Studies. The course will include early Native Americans, Explorers, and Settlers of East Tennessee. This course will enhance students in regard to State EOC with chapters on Perfect 36, State and National leaders and heroes such as York, Hull, and Senator Baker. Also include chapters on the 1920s in Johnson City and other areas in regard to Prohibition, Monkey Trails, and Depression. The course will be designed to develop critical thinking skills by using various independent research methods. It will also be document based and writing intensive. WAR AND AMERICAN SOCIETY One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 This course will examine the impact of war on American society from colonial times to the Cold War. The class will focus on political, social, cultural, and military themes. Special emphasis is placed on the Civil War and World War II. |
ECONOMICS
Half Semester 1/2 credit--Grade 11-12 Economics studies taxes, personal economics, the stock market, and investments. Required course for graduation U.S. GOVERNMENT Half Semester 1/2 credit--Grade 11-12 American Government studies national, state, local, and world governments. Required course for graduation ADVANCED PLACEMENT MICRO AND MACRO ECONOMICS Half Semester 1/2 credit--Grade 11-12 This course is a survey equivalent to an introductory college course in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Emphasis is on preparation for the AP Economics exam. ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. GOVERNMENT One Semester 1 credit--Grade 11-12 This Advanced Placement course is a survey equivalent to an introductory college course in Politics and Government. Emphasis is on preparation for the AP Government exam. IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS HL1 One Year 1 credit--Grade 11 This course is a comprehensive examination of major global historical events that shaped the history of the Western Hemisphere and Europe in the last century. This course is for those junior’s engaging in the IB Diploma Program or those wanting to take the course for an IB certificate. Pre-requisite: World History Honors or AP European History; summer packet required IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS HL2 One Year 1 credit--Grade 12 This course is a closer examination of Western Hemispheric and European democracy, international relations, & war that shaped the 20th century. It builds on the concepts and thoughts covered in IB History of the Americas HL 1 course. Pre-requisite: IB History of the Americas HL1 SOCIOLOGY One Semester 1 credit--Grade 10-12 Students will examine the ways people interact with one another and examine relationships in social institutions such as families and societies. Students will study the growth and change in communities and the causes and effects of social tension. |
